The Enfield Identity
The borough carries a notable industrial heritage. The Lee-Enfield rifle was manufactured here, and the area was once home to significant armaments production. The world's first cash machine was installed at a Barclays branch in Enfield Town in 1967, an innovation that transformed banking globally. Today, the local economy has shifted toward retail, services, and small businesses, with the Palace Gardens shopping centre and the regenerated Enfield Town centre serving as commercial hubs.
Looking Ahead
Major development projects are reshaping parts of the borough. The Meridian Water scheme represents one of the largest regeneration projects in London, promising thousands of new homes and commercial space. The long-awaited delivery of the Bakerloo Line extension would bring the Underground to the eastern parts of the borough, though timelines remain uncertain.
